About the company

Nouvel Opera Fribourg is a live action play collective, "make[ing] fun of the conventions of good genre to step over the barriers isolating the lyrical from contemporary scenic creation".

Our task was too create a brand identity and apply it to a campaign design for their upcoming play, Powder Her Face. This included everything from physical to digital, and static to animated touchpoints. As an opportunity to try new things, we researched other designers of interest, learning and understanding their process and ideologies, applying it this work.

Insights

Learning from the giants

Through researching and learning the graphic design methodologies and philosophies of Emil Ruder, Zuzana Licko, and Ellen Lupton, we generated insights to drive the visual form of our clients project. The project explores the use of layering and negative space to selectively show content, in order to encourage investigation into the composition.

Emil Ruder
  • Negative spaces can form relationships with each other to shape the form.

Zuzana Licko
  • Revealing only a portion of a form creates a different message within the context than if it was presented in its entirety.

Ellen Lupton
  • The layering of elements creates a frame in which the content is presented and understood.

Art Direction

By crafting the negative space to create an emphasis on what ‘could’ be there, the eye is invited to explore and question their assumptions. This encourages the viewer to use the context around the space to fill in the blanks.
